ARGUMENT IN AN ATHENIAN JAIL: SOCRATES AND THE LAW – LESSON PLAN

http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=291

A lesson plan for grades 9-12 in which they examine The Crito. "This lesson focuses on the Crito, in which Socrates argues against the idea that he should escape the penalty of death imposed on him by Athens, laying the groundwork for future debates over the rights of the individual and the rule of law. Students read the dialogue and analyze its arguments in class discussion, extending the dialogue by adding themselves to it. They then consider how Socrates might have responded to extenuating circumstances: for example, if his sentence had been imposed by a tyrant rather than in a trial, or if it had been influenced by prejudice. To conclude, students consider whether this Socratic argument still holds true today, finding examples in contemporary American society to demonstrate their point of view." Excellent

Now the demes of Attica demand to know what happened in the last 73 years of Athenian dominance of Hellas. It has been decided amongst the people of Athens that something went amuck with the "father of democracy." The question now is did the Athens of the Golden Age run an empire of a democracy. You as students of Ancient Greek language and history have been subpoenaed to participate in the trial of all time. There will be various ways for you to research and participate in this trial. Some of you will need to convince the jury for your argument; some of your will be key witnesses subpoenaed by either counsel; others of you will be court reporters in charge of upholding the standards of the court. In any even, you will report to the Heliaea courthouse in the Agora to  the trial of the era! By the end of the court sessions, as a class, you will all vote either to crown our Athena statue with the olive wreath of democracy or  with a narcissus wreath of imperialism." Excellent

Conclude this discussion by having students comment on the relevance of this ancient play to contemporary life. When in recent history have individuals been forced to choose between the law and human rights?
